Saturday 24th June: Girls opening day

The second weekend of the Pitchero Aces Nationals is well and truly underway and the girls haven’t disappointed.

Just like last weekend, the Saturday kicked off with the opening ceremony as Rezz Ra lead out the captains in front of enthusiastic players, coaches and parents alike to the official Pitchero ACES single ‘ACES’.

Fittingly, this weekend’s tournament coincides with Women’s Sports Week and it is great to see so many of the best girls teams in the country here in Nottingham and doing themselves proud.

Additionally, the standard of football has been immense and the competitive nature of all the games has been great to see.

The atmosphere throughout the day was great and despite the very blustery conditions, spirits didn’t seem to drop and even the teams that didn’t manage to get through held their heads high.

After a gruelling but enjoyable day, the three winners from each of the age categories were finally decided after three hard fought finals between six excellent teams.

In the U13’s final it was Preston who managed to find the winning formula as they beat Welsh side Glamorgan 3-1 in a great encounter. Huge congratulations to both teams, here’s what the winning managers had to say after they were presented with the trophy.

Your U14’s final went right down to the wire with London managing to win the sudden death penalty shootout. A huge shame for Washington, arguably the worst way to lose a competition but well done to London who will be back next season to defend their title.

Finally, the eldest age group of the day was the U16’s, the only age group to play on the 11-a-side pitches today.

The winners from that match were Norfolk who ran out 4-0 winners against a Leicester side who did a fantastic job to get to where they did after joining as a late entry and having their keeper injured in the first game.

Both teams did a great job but in the end, Norfolk were too strong and claimed the Pitchero ACES Nationals title.

Another fantastic day, we have some great new national champions and everyone who attended should leave with their heads held high.

We do it all again tomorrow as we welcome the U15 and U17 girls, who will be crowned Pitchero ACES National champions?
