10 Jun AFC Rushden and Diamonds become first ever Under-17 Champions in Pitchero Aces Nationals history
AFC Rushden and Diamonds, representing Northampton, played fantastic football all day which resulted in becoming the first under-17 champion in the Aces Nationals.
The day saw many big teams fall including double, treble and cup winners.
In the early stages of the day, 4 very tough groups were drawn and one of the early favourites, Leicester, started off with a wobble to the team from Hull.
Leicester however came back strong and won their group, going through top on head to head against Loughborough.
This Leicester team beat last year’s under-16 National Champions, Marlow, in the Quarter finals to move on to the Semis where they dispatched the team from Cannock 2-0.
The day saw a few penalty shootouts; Derby lost 3-2 on pens to Wakefield in the Last 16 who then went on to lose their Quarter Final penalty shootout 3-2 to Cannock.
The eventual winners from Northampton had the biggest score line of the day, beating Sale 6-0 and Loughborough and Portsmouth shared the longest penalty shootout, with Loughborough netting 5 and Portsmouth netting 4.
The final was a cagey affair, with many close chances. However, Northampton edged it with a single goal. The game finished 1-0 to the winners and the trophy went back down to Northampton with a very happy bunch of lads.
Throughout the day we saw some fine football from some talented teams from across the country, we now move forward to next weeks age groups, Boys U09, U10 ,U13 and U14.
